Brief History

Virgin Atlantic was established in 1984 initially British Atlantic Airways. The plan of starting airlines was originally of its co-founders Randolph Fields and Alan Hellary to fly between London and the Falkland Islands. After a few times, they have changed their name to Virgin Atlantic Airways. But due to some issue on the company’s management with Sir Richard Branson fields sold his shares in the company.

The first flight flew on 22 June 1984 from Gatwick Airport to Newark Liberty International Airport. It was a maiden flight.

Along with the airline they owned a holiday company too known as Virgin Holidays. Virgin Atlantic Limited was controlling the holiday company, by 51%. More than 50% of shares were owned by the Virgin Group and the remaining 49% by Delta Air Lines. They were two different companies with separate administrations from Virgin-branded airlines.

Virgin Atlantic Airways Limited and Virgin Atlantic International Limited both hold Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Type A Operating Licenses. This is the permit for Virgin Atlantic Airways, operating as, to carry passengers, cargo, and mail on aircraft with 20 or more seats.

Three years ago, in the month of July 2017, Virgin Atlantic decided to do a joint venture. They have announced its intention about this with French airline Air France–KLM, but after only 2 and a half year in December 2019, it was announced that the joint venture announced earlier would not include a stake in Virgin Atlantic.

Fleet

Virgin Atlantic is operational with a mix of different aircraft. It began with G-VIRG, the airline’s first Boeing 787 to the advanced Airbus A350, to make up one of the newest fleets in the sky.
