Introduction
On 1 December 1989, Net and Silkar, two entities, started a partnership with Aer Lingus to find an inclusive tour charter airline called Pegasus Airlines. On 15 April 1990, only a few weeks later, the airline was inaugurated. They started their services with only two Boeing 737-400s. Pegasus is now one of the top airlines of Turkey serving multiple destinations including Pakistan.
Awards
Pegasus Airlines have the achievement of winning the world’s best low-cost airline. Pegasus competed with some of the world’s leading low-cost airlines for the title. Finally, the airline won the title of ‘The Best Low-Cost Airline’ in 2017 and won the award for its “affordability and high-quality service”.
Pegasus Airlines has been awarded the title of ‘National Winner’ in the 2019 European Business Awards. It is one of the world’s largest and most prestigious business competitions.
This has increased by around 52% CTR (click-through rate), a 13% decrease in cost per action, a 32% increase in clicks, and a 12% increase in pay per action.ards.
Alliances
Pegasus Airlines have a total network of 111 destinations in 42 countries around the world. The airline flies scheduled services to 35 destinations within Turkey and 76 in the rest of the world. Pegasus airline was initially allied with a German airline named Air Berlin Turkey. Later it was merged into Pegasus airlines.
It is serving for more than 30 years. It is an independent airline and is not part of any alliance. However, it has alliances with Alitalia, FlyNas and KLM.
Brief History
The starting of few years was difficult for the airline when Turkish tourism was affected during Iraq and Kuwait tension. Gradually the airline started gaining profit and in 2007, Pegasus had reached a domestic market share of 15%, which later reached up to 27% in 2013. In 2019, it carried a total of 29.87 million passengers.
ESAS Holdings purchased Pegasus Airlines in 2005 and placed Ali Sabanci as the chairman. After only two months, he changed the airline from a charter airline to a low-cost airline.
Germany and Turkey decided to launch Air Berlin and Pegasus Airlines Air Berlin Turkey in November 2011. But after only two years in 2013, the new airline was merged into Pegasus Airlines.
Pegasus Airlines, become the second-largest airline in Turkey in 2012, signed for up to 100 A320 neo Family aircraft (57 A320neo and 18 A321neo models), of which 75 were firm orders. Pegasus became a new Airbus customer and the first Turkish airline to order the A320neo. This was the achievement for the Pegasus airlines as it was the largest single commercial aircraft order ever placed by an airline in Turkey at that time. The announcement was made by Binali Yıldırım, the Turkish Minister of Transport on 18 December 2012 at a ceremony.
Fleet
Pegasus airline currently has a fleet size of 81 aircraft consists of 47 Boeing 737-800s and 34 Airbus A320-200s, of which 22 are A320-200neos. It has also included 78 A320neo family aircraft on order for delivery by 2025 (35 A320neo, 25 A321neo ACF, and 18 A321neo).
The delivery of the A320neo and A321neo aircraft will maintain a low average fleet age, improve the efficiency of fuel consumption of the fleet, and this also helps to lower unit cost through increased aircraft size due to the contribution of A321 variants.
